Please note that the given exchange rate Moroccan dirham to ruble is not the rate of sale or purchase of currency by a bank. We present the average market rate, which is the average value between purchase and sale. When planning your trip to any country, you can roughly predict possible expenses and calculate the amount of money needed for the trip. But it is worth keeping in mind that the real exchange rate of the Moroccan dirham at the country's exchange offices will differ slightly from that given here, because the markup when buying or selling will be set by a specific bank or exchange office, which you contact.
History of the Moroccan dirham, useful information for tourists
In the state of Morocco, the official currency is the Moroccan dirham. Currency is issued Central Bank country "Bank al-Maghrib", founded in the late 50s of the last century. The dirham is a divisible currency and is divided into 100 centimes. Before the dirham, the Moroccan franc was used on the territory of the state, and even earlier - the Moroccan rial. The rial was in circulation in the country until 1921; it was replaced by the franc at the rate of 1 to 5, respectively. After Morocco was recognized as an independent state and reunified with Morocco by Spain, the Spanish peseta was introduced. You could buy one peseta for 10 francs. Initially, after the introduction of the Moroccan dirham, its unit of exchange was the franc. So, one dirham was divided into 100 francs. However, in 1974, the small change coin was replaced by the centime. Since 1985, the state authorities have maintained a floating exchange rate for the dirham in relation to hard currencies. Currently in circulation are banknotes of the 1987 series with a modification of 1991 (different years of issue) and the 2002 series. Main colors of banknotes: green, yellow, pink, brown, blue, purple. The obverse of each banknote is decorated with either a portrait of Muhammad VI or a portrait of Hassan II. The 2002 series 100 dirham note features portraits of Mohammed V, Mohammed VI and Hassan II. WITH reverse side On the banknotes there are images of horsemen, a green march, a shell, a fishing boat, a panorama of the Udaya fortress, a mosque fountain, and an adobe building.
1 dirham (dirham, direm) = 100 centimes. International code – MAD, symbol – Dh.In circulation are coins of 10 and 20 centimes, ½, 1, 2, 5 and 10 dirhams, as well as banknotes of 20, 50, 100 and 200 dirhams.
The coat of arms of Morocco is minted on the obverse of the 10, 20 centimes and ½ dirham coins; the obverse of the 1, 2, 5 and 10 dirham coins depicts the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI. Coin material:
10 and 20 centimes – golden-colored copper-aluminum alloy (northern gold);
½, 1, 2 dirhams – copper-nickel alloy;
5 dirhams - bimetal, outer part - copper-nickel alloy, inner part - alloy of copper, zinc and nickel;
10 dirhams - bimetal, outer part - aluminum bronze, inner part - copper-nickel alloy.
The coins bear the dates of issue according to the usual Gregorian and Islamic calendars (1987 and 1407 respectively)
The banknotes depict members of the royal dynasty. Banknotes differ in color and image:
20 dirhams - purple banknote, obverse - King Mohammed VI, reverse - panorama of the Udaya fortress;
50 dirhams - green banknote, obverse - King Mohammed VI, reverse - adobe building;
100 dirhams - brown banknote, obverse - Kings Mohammed VI, Mohammed V and Hassan II, reverse - Green March (mass demonstration of Moroccans in November 1975);
200 dirhams - blue banknote, obverse - kings Mohammed VI and Hassan II, reverse - window of the Hassan II mosque.
In the 19th century, silver money (falus) was used in Morocco, and later Moroccan rials and dirhams. During French colonial rule, francs were used. With independence in 1960, the issuance of dirhams was resumed.
In resort areas, it is not necessary to use local money to buy Moroccan souvenirs. Officially the law prohibits trading operations With foreign currency, but most traders do not pay serious attention to this.
But if you are going on an excursion to Marrakesh, Fes, Rabat or want to stroll through the shopping centers of Casablanca, you will have to buy Moroccan dirhams.
The currency is quite young, dirhams appeared in Morocco only in 1960, and until that moment Moroccan francs were used here (in the picture on the left). Don't be surprised by the name, because Morocco is a former colony of France.
Only in 1972 were francs completely withdrawn from circulation and replaced by centimes. The older generation of Moroccans can still tell prices in francs. For example, you ask how much a magnet costs, and they will answer you: 1000. This means that it costs 1000 francs, that is, 1000 centimes, that is, 10 dirhams. But this occurs only in the Moroccan “province”; in resort areas such people can rarely be found.
Credit cards
Not very common in Morocco. Of course, in large supermarkets, hotels and shopping centers you can pay with a credit card, but in souvenir shops, taxis and cafes they do not accept plastic. Stock up on cash.
Now let's move on to the physical embodiment of Moroccan money - coins and banknotes.
Full exclusive
This banknote is only available in Morocco.
As you noticed, it is oriented vertically, but this is not its main feature. These banknotes are made from a special composite material under the brand name “Durasafe”, a combination of plastic and paper.
This material was used for the first time, although experiments with other plastics have already been carried out in other countries, just remember the 20 banknote. Durasafe is considered the most promising material for banknotes.
The unusual material and orientation of the bill made it popular among collectors. With a face value of 25 Moroccan dirhams, which is about 2.5 dollars, its average price on e-bay is $10. That is, 4 times more expensive than face value.
This bill is also commemorative. Released in 2012, it commemorates 25 years since Morocco began printing its own money. If you come across such a banknote, take it as a souvenir.
Note: officially you cannot take money out of the country’s borders, but no one will check your banknotes at the checkpoint.
What coins are there in Morocco?
There are a total of 9 types of coins in circulation. Arab countries love coins. The minimum Moroccan dirham banknote is 20, which is equivalent to 100 Russian rubles(note: calculated at the exchange rate of December 2014), everything that is less is coins.
When arriving in Morocco own money in 1960, the dirham was issued in the form of a silver coin and “circulated” until 1965, and even then Morocco did not abandon silver. The new 5 dirham coin was silver. Only in 1980 did the Moroccans abandon silver money. It seems that the Arabs' love for coins and precious metals has no boundaries.
Currently in circulation are coins of 1, 5, 10, 20 centimes and 1/2, 1, 2, 5 and 10 dirhams. On the reverse of all coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 dirhams, King Mohammed VI of Morocco is depicted (an example of a coin is pictured on the left), which there was no doubt about.
The obverses are no more interesting; they depict the coat of arms of Morocco and you can read the year of issue and denomination.
Remember! If the king is depicted on the coin, then it is dirhams, and if there is no portrait of him, then it is centimes. This way you will never confuse them.
And one more important point! The 2 dirham coin is larger in size than 5 dirhams, do not get confused; the principle “the larger the denomination, the larger the size” is not observed in Moroccan coins.
Sometimes you can find coins with the image of the previous king Hassan II; they were last issued in 1987, although the chances for a tourist to get their hands on such a coin are scanty.
It is unlikely that you will come across 1 centime. Officially, such coins are in circulation, but their last issue also occurred in 1987 and they were not reissued further.
The picture on the right shows the most interesting coin of Morocco. This is 1/2 dirham. Please note that the denomination is not 50 centimes, but rather 1/2 dirham. This occurs in Arab countries, for example, there is a 1/2 coin.
The obverse depicts a spacecraft, which surprised us at first glance. None of us had ever heard news about the brave Moroccan astronauts. Indeed, Morocco does not have its own space program, and no Moroccan has ever flown into space.
One can only remember Philippe Perrin, an astronaut from France, who was simply born in Morocco in the city of Marrakech.
It turned out that this coin design expresses the country's desire for new technologies and progress.
Moroccan currency banknotes
There are only 5 of them and we have already talked about one of them (25 dirhams) above. Regular banknotes come in denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200 dirhams.
The obverse of all banknotes features an image of King Mohammed VI and a Maghreb-style door. In the photo on the left, you see the door to the left of the portrait of the monarch.
This door appeared on the new 2013 banknotes. Theoretically, it is possible to find banknotes from the previous edition of 2002, but this is unlikely. The door symbolizes the openness of the country of Morocco and the rich architectural heritage of the Maghreb.
The front side of all banknotes is the same. Only the door on all banknotes is different. Moreover, it is curious that the portrait of King Mohammed VI is the same on the banknotes everywhere, but the door is different.
Banknotes differ in size and color. Everyone has a different color, which is convenient for use. The larger the denomination of the banknote, the larger the size.
That's all we can tell you about money in Morocco - the Moroccan dirham currency. Have a good trip to the Maghreb and read our articles about this country ( links below).
Morocco, whose currency is called the dirham, is an exotic and very colorful country. Despite the fact that now Russian tourists rarely visit this state, every year interest in holidays in Morocco is growing rapidly. Therefore everything more people are beginning to become interested in Moroccan currency. This will be discussed further.
Short story
The history of Morocco's national currency is as interesting as the historical path of the kingdom itself. Despite the fact that the current currency in the country began to be used relatively recently, history monetary system very old in this country.
For a long time, until 1921, the country used a monetary unit called the Moroccan rial. It was then replaced by the franc, since the country was then a colony of France. Only in 1956 did the Kingdom of Morocco become sovereign, gaining independence from the French metropolis.
At the same time, the national currency was changed. Between 1956 and 1960 In Morocco, the Spanish peseta was used, which was due to the unification of French and Spanish Morocco.
In 1960, the country finally acquired a unique national currency, which is called the Moroccan dirham.
Price tags in stores are usually abbreviated "Dh", which is a shortened version of the name dirham. Therefore, you should not be surprised to see these letters on the check.
Currency of Morocco: description
The country's national currency has the international designation MAD, which delights English-speaking people, since this combination of letters translated means “madness”, “madness”.
There are one hundred centimes in one dirham. Both dirham and centime are very popular names for banknotes in Arab countries.
Exchange rate
The Moroccan currency is freely exchanged on currency exchanges. Its rate is quite stable, although low. It is set by the state, so it practically does not change. Small fluctuations are associated with a number of factors such as the stock exchange, the general situation in the economy, foreign exchange market peace, etc.
Today, the Moroccan dirham to ruble exchange rate is approximately 5.2 rubles per dirham. Consequently, for one ruble you can get about sixteen centimes. The exchange rate of the Moroccan dirham to the ruble, and to other currencies, is quite stable. This balance has been maintained for quite some time.
The Moroccan dirham to US dollar is valued at a rate of approximately nine and a half dirhams to the dollar. Accordingly, one dirham contains only $0.11.
Approximately the same situation in currency pair dirham/euro. The Moroccan dirham to euro exchange rate is 11 dirhams per euro. Thus, one dirham is about 0.09 euros.
As for trading on Forex, the Moroccan currency is not in great demand there. But local traders often prefer to trade in the national currency.
Exchange operations
Tourists who want to visit the Kingdom of Morocco should be aware that foreign currency trading is prohibited in this country. However, most sellers at local souvenir markets violate this law. Therefore, you can safely pay with them in dollars or euros.
In other places it is better to pay in local currency. It is not so easy to exchange foreign money for government money in Morocco. Not every bank, even large ones, works with foreign currencies, and if it does, the commission is usually quite high. Therefore, the best solution for a tourist would be to exchange money at a hotel, where commissions are not too high and many currencies are exchanged.
Although they change money at the airport, it is extremely unprofitable. The fee is very high.
Cashless payments
Morocco is a modern country, despite Islamic traditions, and quite rich, so there are no particular difficulties with payment by bank transfer No. Any large supermarket, cafe or restaurant will happily accept your credit card.
There are also quite a lot of ATMs, but only in major cities. In small towns this may be difficult. Not everywhere there is cashless payment, and if there is, it is foreign bank cards may not be accepted.
Terminals in large stores accept plastic cards even with foreign currencies, since conversion to dirhams occurs automatically. It is very convenient and practical.
Unlike Europe and America, in Morocco you cannot pay cashless in taxis, public transport, in the market, and in many small shops too. It is best to always have a sufficient amount of cash with you to avoid problems with payment. Especially when it comes to provincial towns and villages.
Finally
Every year, the interest of Russian tourists in holidays in Morocco is growing, since it is an excellent alternative to the already boring Turkey and Egypt. Country with rich history, oriental flavor and warm sea and beaches. What else do you need for relaxation?
With growing interest in Morocco, the country's currency is also beginning to attract increased interest. Moreover, in Russia dirhams cannot be exchanged anywhere. It is not surprising that people who want to visit this wonderful country are concerned about the financial side.
It is better not to take rubles with you to Morocco, but to exchange them in Russia for dollars or euros. Then there will be no serious problems with exchanging money for local ones.
Due to the fact that the Moroccan dirham was introduced into circulation relatively recently, a visiting tourist may get confused about the prices. Outside the big cities, many market traders habitually quote prices in francs, which are ten times less than the dirham. That is, if they tell you the price of 100 for a souvenir, then most likely the real price is only 10 dirhams.
